Azerbaijan's Ministry marks World Information Society Day

ICT sector revenues will likely reach petrodollars in 10 to 15 years, Azerbaijan's Communications and Information Minister, Ali Abbasov, told a board meeting marking 17 May World Information Society Day.

He added that the consulting firm's proposals for establishment of innovation zones have been introduced to the president.

"We have concluded an agreement with South Korea for creation of e-government," he noted.

The Deputy Minister, Iltimas Mammadov, said conversion to electronic telephone exchange system is 76.1% complete and there are more than 3 million mobile phone costumers, APA reports.

"There are 30 internet providers, 900 internet cafes and 6 computers per 100 people. AZN 221.9 million were invested in telecom sector during 2006, of which AZN 80.8 million were foreign capital."

17 May marks the anniversary of the signature of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated since 1969.

Following the World Summit on the Information Society, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/60/252 which identifies 17 May as World Information Society Day.

The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference which met in Antalya (Turkey) in November 2006 therefore decided to henceforth celebrate 17 May as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
