Rajabov wins starting match

14 January 2007 [02:13] - TODAY.AZ
The single decisive result of the first round at Corus chess festival in Holland was Teymur Rajabov's comfortable win with black against local favourite Loek van Wely.

The Azeri improved on their previous discussion in this Bayonet variation of the King's Indian from the European championships just over a year ago. 15…Nh5 (15…fxe4?! was played in the aforementioned game) started a series of moves leading to black's taking control of the game. It ended with the aesthetic and natural exchange sacrifice (see diagram 3) 39…Rxb3! 40.axb3 (40.Qxb3 Qxe2+) Nxe6 heading to f4 with decisive consequences, forcing the Dutchman to acknowledge defeat.
