Roman Pope meets with Muslim ambassadors and religious leaders

22 September 2006 [22:37] - TODAY.AZ
Roman Catholic Pope Benedict XVI yesterday met with ambassadors of Muslim countries and Muslim religious leaders to restore the dialogue between Catholic Church and Islamic world.

The reason to the meeting was to explain his controversial remarks on Islam and Prophet Muhammad (s) made in Germany last week.

The pope angered millions of Muslims around the world when he quoted a medieval emperor criticizing some teachings of the Prophet Mohammed (s).

The pontiff said he has "deep respect” for Islam, but maintains he was misunderstood and had not intended to endorse a negative view of the religion.

Most Muslim states and organizations still demand the pope to apologize, APA reports.
