Court drops suit against an opposition newspaper editor

23 August 2006 [10:05] - TODAY.AZ
An Azeri court on Monday dropped a criminal suit against an opposition newspaper editor who was sentenced to one year in a prison camp earlier this month for libeling a parliamentary candidate, the newspaper's deputy editor said.

According to the Associated Press, Baku's Nasimi District Court made the decision after Shakhin Agabeili apologized to Azeri Interior Minister Ramil Usubov for a newspaper article that linked Usubov to a formerly high-ranking ministry officer now on trial for killing an opposition magazine editor and other crimes.

"The lawyers for the interior minister reached an accord with Shakhin Agabeili and in court he apologized to Ramil Usubov. What else was he supposed to do? The lawsuit was withdrawn on Monday after our newspaper published a denial," said Parvin Kyazimgolu, deputy editor of the newspaper Milli Yol.
