The Kyur and Araz Rivers polluted by the toxic substances running from Georgia and Armenia

15 January 2006 [17:02] - TODAY.AZ
Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR), Monitoring Center of Environment Pollution announced the results of the monitoring of level of pollution in the rivers Kyur and Araz.

As APA informs, the report on the results of the monitoring states that, the biggest river of the Southern Caucasus Kyur runs from the north-west of to the south-east of Azerbaijan. The MENRS has opened laboratories supplied with modern equipments and facilities in Gazakh and Beilagan to examine the quality of the waters, define the level of pollution and solve the dynamics and it implements measures in this field.

According to the results of the monitoring, the Kyur becomes turbid in the period of less-watery, changes between 50-1200 mgr./l.The Kyur is more turbid especially, in its below current. The turbidity is above 1000 mgr./l in the period of much-watery. It is cause by the existence of natural substances (clay and sand) in the water. The general level of pollution in the Kyur is very high and level of pollution is not the same in all parts of the river.

Main polluters are oil and oil productions, phenols, synthetic surfaced active substances, heavy metals, different organic matters, pesticides. The polluting of the Kyur with chlorine-containing pesticides declined sharply in the past 10 years. The tracks of pesticides remained in the areas below Zardab region. The upper and lower currents of the Kyur are polluted most of all. The upper stream of the Kyur faces trans-border pollution from the territories of Armenia and Georgia. The right branch of the Kyur Debeda and Khrami rivers is polluted from Georgia and the Agstafachay and Tovuzchay rivers from Armenia are polluted through refuses and industrial wastes (building (cement), fertilizer, metallurgy and other establishments). The polluted waters of Tbilisi and Rustavi flow into the Kyur in Rustavi. The tensest regime on chemical pollution is observed in Shikli-2 village station. This part is full of oil and oil products, phenols. The oxygen regime of the river gets worsened in the period of less-watery in summer and winter and the level of oxygen richness declines to 70%-60%. The right branches Agstafachay and Tovuzchay Rivers have great impacts from the upper stream till Mingechevir Water Reservoir. These rivers are polluted by heavy metals, phenols, pesticides and different organic matters in the territory of Armenia. Sura village observation station of the Kyur is located in the lower streams of the Kyur and Araz and the later is the largest branch of the Kyur. The Araz is 1072 km in length. The general area of the water fence is 102000 sq.km and 18740 sq.km of it is in the territory of Azerbaijan. The Araz is more polluted in comparison with the Kyur at present. Trans-border pollution from Armenia is in maximum level here. The rivers Okhchuchay, Hakarichay, Bargushad pollute the Araz by the waste waters of metallurgy establishments of Armenia. The main problem for preventing the trans-border pollution is that only Azerbaijan joined the Helsinki Convention (1992) "On protection and consuming of waters passing borders and international lakes".
