Azeri music to be performed at Arts Building Recital Hall

The UTSA Department of Music presents a Monday Night Artist Series concert by Azerbaijan violinist Zara Guliyeva, accompanied by UTSA's Geoffrey Waite on piano, at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 17 in the Arts Building Recital Hall, 1604 Campus.

Guliyeva will perform works by Azeri composers which integrate Oriental-style melodies into Western harmony, producing a sound reminiscent of the 20th century caf?-concert style.

Guliyeva, who is vice president of the philharmonic orchestra of Azerbaijan, received her degrees from Azerbaijan National Music Academy and the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory of Music in St. Petersburg, where she studied with Boris Gutnikov, leader of the Russian school of violin.

She pursued an international career performing with famous conductors in the Orient and Europe. Her performances emphasize 19th and 20th repertories with which she popularized 20th-century Azeri music. Additionally, Guliyeva created and hosted a television series on art and music, which was broadcast nationally in Azerbaijan.

Concertgoers are invited to a pre-concert conversation with Guliyeva at 6 p.m. in the Recital Hall, which will focus on the cultural environment in which the artist lives and her discovery of new music in Azerbaijan and its capital city, Baku.
