Rector of the Baku branch of Moscow State Lomonosov University, Doctor of Philology, Professor Nargiz Pashayeva gave an interview to RIA “Novosti” Agency.
She had a number of national and international awards, including the Russian “Friendship” Order for outstanding contribution to the development of Russian-Azerbaijani cultural relations and promotion of Russian art abroad. Recently she was awarded the Golden Order “For Merit of the European Economic Chamber of Commerce and Industry. According to the University estimations, the Baku branch in a short time has become one of the best universities in the region.
Nargiz Pashayeva noted that over the years the Branch was visited by more than 1,100 teachers from Moscow. “Of course, in addition to university life, our Russian partners also formed their circle of friends, communication, interests. Baku for them is not only the field of professional interest, and this city becomes for them close and native, where every time they want to come. On my opinion, the Baku branch of Moscow State University has the larger mission in terms of human relations, inter-science, international, and, of course, inter-states relations. The work being done in this area is a continuation of the glorious historical traditions rooted in Azerbaijan in past centuries by outstanding scientists, educators, public figures, the progressive forces of the people, and our University should be considered in the same vein, “ Pashayeva says.
Azerbaijan not today became tolerant and developed country in the region. It was really a long historical process. In Azerbaijan, in the XII century, the great Nizami Ganjavi praised the friendship of the peoples and the unity of people of all races. Nothing happens suddenly, without foundations and traditions.
Speaking about the role of the Russian language in modern Azerbaijan, Nargiz Pashayeva said: “The value of the Russian language is obvious, not only for Azerbaijan, but also for any other post-Soviet republics. To know the Russian language is important not because it is the language of big government, as part of which we were in over a long period of time, and not because of the specific economic or political considerations. Not knowing the Russian language, we are depriving ourselves of the opportunity to obtain comprehensive information on the global progress on the achievements of science, education, the world of social life and culture as a whole”.
The Rector said in her interview on the activities of the Branch, the innovations introduced in high school: “Currently, the University has five faculties - mathematics, philology, chemical, psychological, incidentally, the only one in the country, and economic. Enhance of the capacity of the University is actually every year. Last example: Dean of the Faculty of Economics, who recently visited our University, proposed to expand the number of incoming students from 25 to 50 to be able to form two groups. Already this year, we plan to increase the number of seats in the Economics Department. Another innovation which we discussed recently: not waiting for the end of the four-year education and bachelor degrees, we want to open the branch based on two-year master's Faculty of Economics. This is due to the fact that the “economist-manager” specialty is of rather broad professional spectrum. Now we can receive students holding a bachelor's degree in mathematics, as well as those who have received education on the basis of other universities have a certain specialty, but want to receive diploma of Moscow State University. I think this is a great opportunity for people in Azerbaijan as the diploma of graduate of the Faculty of Economics is quite weighty and appropriate category.”
