The actual amount of domestic waste in the capital of Azerbaijan exceeds any estimate.
Informed sources say that there are about 1,500-2,000 illegal landfills in Baku, some of which contain up to 15,000 tons of waste.
"It is impossible to manage with all landfills at once, and the Ministries of Economic Development and of Environment & Natural Resources, the Baku Executive Power and other organizations focused on the closure and rehabilitation of 61 large landfills. Since early 2012 they were able to utilize about 450 tons of garbage from landfills to the Balakhani landfill. Last month alone utilization reached 77,000 tons," the source said.
Previously, the annual volume of waste in Baku was estimated at 500,000-600,000 tons.
Active work on the disposal of waste began in Baku from the creation of Tamiz Shahar OJSC (Clean City).
