A monument-museum dedicated to Azerbaijan’s independence will be erected on one of the highest points in Baku, the Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism Ministry reported. The ministry earlier announced an international competition for the memorial museum construction in accordance with the Cabinet of Ministers’ decree No. 68 dated March 19, 2007.
In this regard, a sketch "Istiqlal" ("Independence") under the authorship of the Azerbaijani architect, Secretary of the Azerbaijani Union of Architects, Elbay Gasimzade, was submitted to the contest.
In the memorial sketch, the monument consists of eight steles located in the bottom eight-pointed star, in the form a pyramid. Steles represent the gateway to heaven where the souls of those who died for Azerbaijan’s independence and the bronze model of the Earth will be in the center of this composition.
Ministry’s spokesperson Zohra Aliyeva said none of the sketches submitted to the contest was approved by all commission members, so the contest was announced for the second time. They did not meet the required criteria.
"As, this question remains open, for sure, once again will be held a competition for the monument-museum,” she said. “Perhaps the members of the committee will revisit the works previously submitted to the competition."
