Forest belts expanded in Azerbaijan

Last year was remembered as a year with the least number of cut-down trees on the country's territory, Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Huseyngulu Baghirov said at the meeting in the ministry with the participation of the ministry's employees and NGO representatives on Tuesday.

Condition of Azerbaijan's forests was also discussed at the meeting. Increase in forest belts has been observed in Azerbaijan over the last years, Baghirov said at the meeting.

He said currently Azerbaijan faces difficult situation with protection of forests in Lankaran, Lerik and Astara regions of Azerbaijan. The minister linked it with relatively large population density in these regions.

Mr Baghirov said last year was remembered as a year with the least number of cut-down trees on the republic's territory. He noted that forest areas in Azerbaijan increased by 0.4 percent.

Western regional office of the Azerbaijani national committee of Helsinki Citizens Assembly announced results of the monitoring conducted jointly with other representatives in the forests in Lankaran and Zagatala regions. The submitted materials reflect issues of organizing protection of forests and forest belts in these territories.
