"Discriminative approach towards Iran sign of West's dual policy"

01 March 2011 [18:38] - TODAY.AZ
Discriminative approach towards Iran’s peaceful nuclear program was an indication to western powers’ double standard policy, Foreign Minister of Iran Ali-Akbar Salehi said Tuesday during the meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay  on the sidelines of the 16th session of the UN Human Rights Council, IRNA reported.

“Unfortunately, the issue of human rights has become a political tool for certain western states to pursue a double standard policy and discriminative approach towards a number of countries,” Salehi told the UN official.

He added that Tehran was enduring to promote its human rights status relying on its great civilization and by paying due attention to the Islamic teachings.

Meanwhile, Pillay felicitated Salehi’s appointment as Iran’s new foreign minister and hailed his speech at the 16th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

She also hoped that Iran would continue its cooperation with the UN Human Rights Commission in the future.

The United States and other Western countries accuse Iran of developing nuclear weapons under cover of peaceful nuclear energy program. Tehran denies the charges, saying its nuclear program is aimed at meeting the country's electricity needs.

The U.N. Security Council adopted six resolutions in connection with the suspension of Iran's nuclear program, with four of them involving the use of economic sanctions on the country.
