Georgia to probe Armenian misappropriation of Georgian brands

05 January 2011 [11:23] - TODAY.AZ
Georgia will respond to and recheck the information about the misappropriation of Georgian brands abroad by the Armenians, Gruzpatent head Irakli Gvaladze told journalists, stressing that it was "not the first time, when Armenia misappropriated Georgian brands."

Earlier, Georgian media reported that Georgian brands in France's retail trading network are sold as Armenian products.

"Such attempts by the Armenian side were also observed before. Regarding to the specifically mentioned fact, we will recheck the information and react appropriately. In particular, it is necessary to clarify whether certain brands were represented in France as a trademark, or simply had such a name," Gvaladze said.

According to the Georgians residing in France, the best Georgian brands are sold in France's retail networks under the guise of Armenian products.

The wine "Saperavi", in particular, is sold as an Armenian brand of expensive alcoholic drinks. The Georgian churchkhela (caramelized grape juice with walnuts) is sold as "Armenian miracle", Georgian bread is sold as Armenian bread, while traditional Georgian khachapuri is sold under the Armenian name of "Khachaturiani" among many other such cases.

It was also confirmed that all the products under "substituted" brands are sold in the so-called Russian supermarkets of Paris, Lyons, Bordeaux, Strasbourg and other cities.
