Iran making progress despite sanctions

"Today even the enemies of the Islamic Revolution acknowledge the power of the Islamic Republic," Head of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Tuesday.

Boroujerdi also hinted that the US bids for mounting pressure on Iran were a means divert attention from US domestic problems ahead of the mid-term congressional vote.

"[US President Barack] Obama, who is facing challenges within his party ahead of elections, tried every measure, including sanctions, pushing for Resolution 1929 and US and EU unilateral sanctions. What did he achieve?" he asked rhetorically.

The lawmaker hailed the country's first nuclear power plant as a "source of national pride."

The UNSC imposed a fourth round of sanctions against Tehran on June 9, over Western accusations that Tehran is following a military nuclear program.

Iranian officials have repeatedly refuted the charges, arguing that as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) the country has the right to use peaceful nuclear energy.
