New initiatives made to preserve Georgian president’s rights

Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has voiced an initiative to entitle the president to dissolve the parliament within the three months and announce new elections.

"But this elections must be made under the new government," he said in an exclusive interview with the TV company "Imedi". "According to the current Constitution, the president can dissolve the government and parliament and hold elections under the government appointed by him."

Ivanishvili urged parliamentarians to begin collecting signatures. Some 76 signatures of 150 MPs are required to initiate amendments to the Constitution.

He added that he will refuse from depriving the Georgian President's rights.

"The president's rights will remain and we will refuse from all bills to deprive his rights, as well as prepare an amnesty for those former officials who were not involved in the killings and tortures," Ivanishvili said.

Prime Minister added that resolving these issues will enable the country to move forward by avoiding a political crisis.
