Georgian-Russian relations to be mulled

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Eric Rubin and Prime Minister of Georgia, Bidzina Ivanishvili discussed the settlement of the Georgian-Russian relations in Tbilisi. As the Prime Minister's Office told Trend, the meeting was held in the State Office behind closed doors.

As Ivanishvili said after the meeting, he hopes for U.S. assistance in this process.

"We also discussed our bilateral relations and expressed hope for their deepening," he said.

Ivanishvili stressed that the past 20 years have showed that the U.S. "is true partner of Georgia". "It was a warm and friendly meeting. I thanked Rubin for the help that U.S. provides to us," he said.

Ivanishvili expressed confidence that the new Georgian government will do more to "deepen" relations between Georgia and the United States.

Military actions were launched in the Georgian region of South Ossetia on Aug.8, 2008. Later Russian troops occupied the city of Tskhinvali and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August.
