Quake rattles major port city in Iran

A 3.9 magnitude earthquake shook the Iranian city of Bandar Abbas on the Persian Gulf last night, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reports.

The University of Tehran's Institute of Geophysics reports the earthquake occurred at 10:23 Tuesday night at a depth of 10 kilometers.

There have been no reports of damage in Bandar Abbas.

Iran sits on several major geological fault lines and experiences earthquakes, some of them deadly, frequently.

According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey earthquakes in Iran have killed more than 83,000 people since 1990.
