'Georgia ready to settle relations with Russia'

Georgian Deputy Prime Minister Giorgi Baramidze held bilateral meetings in Italy within his working visit. He takes part in 29th international conference on global security, which takes place in Rome.

Giorgi Baramidze met with Italian Minister for European Affairs Enzo Moavero and chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Lamberto Dini in the Italian Senate.

Giorgi Baramidze stressed the importance of holding democratic elections in Georgia and the activity of the monitoring missions of EU, OSCE, Council of Europe and other international organizations.

The issues of Georgian-Russian conflict settlement were discussed at the meeting. Baramidze stressed the need for beginning peaceful settlement of the conflict on the basis of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili's peace initiative.

Deputy Prime Minister familiarized the Italian side with the Georgian government's strategy on occupied territories, stressing the importance of the document with a neutral status and asked the Italian side to assist in admitting this document.

Georgia's integration into the European Union, in particular, association agreements, strategic and priority areas of cooperation between Georgia and the EU were discussed.

The Italian side expressed its support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

During the meetings with the Italian side, Baramidze stressed the issue of strengthening the Georgian-Italian relations and the importance of coordinating Italy's and Georgia's actions in international organizations. He also emphasized that despite the current challenges, Georgia continues reforms and the process of democratic transformation.

The parties also discussed the results of the NATO summit in Chicago and the progress shown by Georgia on the way of integration into the alliance.
