Anti-terrorist operation end in arrest of 16 in Turkey

11 June 2012 [11:55] - TODAY.AZ
On Monday, Turkish security forces during a major operation of combating terrorism detained 16 people suspected of involvement in several terrorist attacks and support the terrorists of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the city of Hakkari, TV channel TRT Haber reported.

PKK militants regularly organize terrorist attacks against the civilian population and the security forces of Turkey.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has been lasting for more than 25 years claiming over 40,000 lives. The PKK group is recognized a terrorist organisation by the UN and the European Union.

PKK militants have repeatedly threatened the Turkish authorities by the intensified armed conflict, if concrete steps are not made to resolve long-term Kurdish problem.
