As the U.N. is celebrating the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II in New York, Azerbaijan's Permanent Mission to the U.N. issued a press release about the events.

The press release stated that films about the war were demonstrated, a photo exhibition on the topic "We Won Together" was organized, and a gala concert attended by artists from Azerbaijan and other CIS member countries was held.

A special plenary session of the U.N. General Assembly took place May 6. Head of the Azerbaijani Permanent Representative to the U.N. Agshin Mehdiyev spoke at the session.

In his speech, he stressed Azerbaijan's contribution to the victory over Fascism, and said during the war hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis fought on the front. About 500,000 died. Mehdiyev drew special attention to the fact that Baku, a major oil production center, provided nearly 70% of the Soviet army's energy needs during the war. More than 500,000 wounded soldiers also received treatment at medical institutions in Azerbaijan in 1941-1945.

Mehdiyev noted that Azerbaijani veterans compatriots have been awarded the highest state awards for their heroism and courage. With regret he emphasized that some members of the international community have not learned from the bitter lessons of the past and continue to violate principles and norms of international law, and disrespect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

Mehdiyev also noted the important role of the U.N. in maintaining international peace and security, and protecting human rights and fundamental freedom.
