Azerbaijani parliament is holding a special sitting.
Azerbaijani parliament started a special sitting on Nov. 20.

The sitting is devoted to the 20th anniversary of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

UNICEF representative in Azerbaijan Mark Hereward, Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova, heads of NGOs, organizations dealing with children's rights attended the meeting.

Making a keynote speech at the sitting, Speaker Ogtay Asadov said children were the most valuable wealth of every nation and mentioned that year 2009 was children’s year in Azerbaijan.

He said Azerbaijani government pays much attention to children and modern legislation on children’s rights has been formed.

“Ten laws have been adopted on children’s rights up to now. Generally, over 70 laws, 10 codes in Azerbaijan covers children’s rights,” he said.

Asadov said special state programs were being implemented for children in the country.

"The committee that oversees this field had been established in Azerbaijan."

The Heydar Aliyev Foundation cares much about for children, he said.
