Jurists from Washington have familiarized themselves with the report covering legal aspects of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
In the frame of “Azerbaijan-USA: 11th security dialogue”, hosted in Washington, the Azerbaijani side presented to the United States a report reflecting legal aspects of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, on which deputy minister of foreign affairs Araz Azimov informed at the briefing devoted to the results of dialogue.

The Azerbaijan-USA dialogue of security, begun since 1996, functioning as a frame mechanism, helps the parties in defining directions of cooperation in military sphere and security.

During the present round of dialogue, the delegations under co-chairmanship of Araz Azimov and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Andrew Shapiro have discussed the questions connected with prevention of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, drug trafficking, fighting terrorism, strengthening of security on the Caspian basin, interests of the USA in region, and have had comprehensive exchange of views on ways of expansion of possibilities of bilateral cooperation in this area.

The deputy minister told that jurists from Washington have familiarised themselves with the report covering legal aspects of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

They have unanimously noticed that the conflict should be settled on the basis of the principle of territorial integrity. Araz Azimov underlined that the principle of “self-determination”" which the Armenian side adheres, should not contradict the principle of “territorial integrity”.

The Azerbaijani side as a compromise stands ready to consider the problem on definition of the status of the Armenian community living in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, within its borders. However, the process cannot take place without participation of a 70-thousand Azerbaijani community ousted from region.

The deputy minister of foreign affairs, having expressed hope that the USA as the co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group will make the greatest efforts for the conflict settlement, said: “We live in the time when are required results of establishment of stability and security in region.” Araz Azimov also recommended to those who consider that opening of the Turkish-Armenian borders is not connected with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, more cautiously to regrad the ongoing processes in region.
