“Azerbaijan now has every reason to become a non-permanent member of UN Security Council,”Azerbaijani political expert Fikrat Sadigov said commenting on media reports that Azerbaijan intends to put forwards candidacy for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council in 2012-2013.

“It is early to talk about it now, but given the fact that many countries that do not even correspond to the level of Azerbaijan for its economic development and geopolitical potential - I mean the African and Asian countries who are non-permanent members of UN Security Council- I think that Azerbaijan, which is now gaining significant weight not only in the region, but also in the global community, has quite real chances to become a non-permanent member of the Security Council,” he said.
"I think Azerbaijan has a right to a non-permanent membership of the Security Council given that Azerbaijan is becoming not just a supplier of hydrocarbons, but also a major partner of many leading countries of the world, who are permanent members of UN Security Council. Selection of those or other states to the Security Council depends on their will to a large extent,” the political expert said.
"Of course, Azerbaijan have yet to work in this direction. We must continue this course and to convince the world that Azerbaijan is quite equal to the task of the non-permanent member of the Security Council and solve problems related to the global world problems in a particular area,” Sadigov said.
The UN Security Council consists of 15 members. Permanent member are Russia, the United States, China, France and the United Kingdom . The rest are elected for two years.
