Azerbaijani MFA: Armenian Foreign Ministry is misleading its public by wrong postulates

07 May 2009 [10:47] - TODAY.AZ
Statements on the right of Nagorno Karabakh people to self-determination contradict to all the basics of international law, and such itself is false, since there are no people of Nagorno Karabakh, reports Day.Az with reference to the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elkhan Poluhov, commenting on the words of Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharian that "the basis for the settlement of the Karabakh problem is the realization of the right of Nagorno Karabakh people to self-determination".

"There are people in this region, that include two major communities - the Azerbaijani and Armenian and ethnic cleansing was carried out against the Azerbaijani community. It is necessary, first of all, to provide conditions for the return of the Azerbaijani community to their ancestral territory, as well as to create conditions for peaceful coexistence between the two communities in this area", underlined the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.

According to him, only then we can speak of legal status of Nagorno-Karabakh.

"A mere registration of the status would occur only in accordance with international principles, which state that the status of Nagorno Karabakh will be determined only within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

Such statements by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia are wrong and mislead the Armenian people and does not create favorable conditions for attaining a compromise and finding a solution to the conflict", said Poluhov.
