Political scientist: Statement of Russian President Dmitri Medvedev clearly states the prevailing of right of territorial integrity over the mythical right of peoples for self-determination

Relations between Azerbaijan and Russia were always friendly, warm and based on the strategic partnership of two equal states respecting each other, said famous political scientist Fikret Sadikhov. According to him "this is a difference between the Azerbaijani-Russian relations and the relations between Russia and Armenia that have been just Russia's outpost in the Caucasus".

"I think the first results of the visit of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to Moscow demonstrate that Azerbaijani-Russian relations have a great future. In particular, the Baku-Novorossiysk pipeline is functioning and the volume of Azerbaijani oil pumping via it is likely to rise. Moreover, talks are held between Gazprom and the state company of Azerbaijan on agreement on cooperation in the gas sector.

The thaw in the Azerbaijani-Russian relations I think is caused by the understanding of the Russian leadership that on the background of different factors, influencing the events in the South Caucasus region especially on the background of thaw in the Turkish-Armenian relations, it is favarable for Russia to be friends with Azerbaijan where this great country was always welcomed and where there are many Russian and Russian-speaking people", noted Sadikhov.

As for the statement of Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, who said speaking about the prospects of resolution of the Karabakh conflict that it is necessary to base on norms of international law and resolutions adopted by UN and OSCE that the statement of Russian president Dmitri Medvedev clearly states prevailing of the right of the territorial integrity over the mythical right of people for self-determination while resolving unsettled territorial conflict.

Sadikhov said that the current leadership of Armenia that has self-determined long ago on the historical lands of Azerbaijan should also take this into account.
