Council of presidents is quite a new tool of Azerbaijani-Ukrainian dialogue and cooperation: official of presidential administration

"Notably, the council of presidents is quite a new tool of the Azerbaijani-Ukrainian dialogue and cooperation. It was established in May of 2008. Ad if Ukraine already has a practice of holding such sessions with such countries as Lithuania, Poland and a number of other regions, for our country this is a new format", said Akhundov commenting on the conduction of the first session of the council of presidents of Azerbaijan and Ukraine Thursday.

"Baku attaches special importance to the relations with Ukraine, therefore, our reaction to the initiative of the Ukrainian party about establishment of such a format of interaction with Azerbaijan was positive and we hope that the council of presidents will promote intensification of the bilateral relations", said Akhundov.

"The main task of the Council is to form a strategy of relations between the two countries and control over fulfillment of agreements on actual issues of cooperation on the high level", reminded Akhundov.

As for the details, he noted that during the first session of the Council of Presidents the sides considered such important issues as a state and prospects of development of cooperation between Ukraine and Azerbaijan in trade-economic and fuel and energy spheres, measures to raise energy security between the two countries, cooperation in the sphere of transport and transit as well as military and technical and cosmic spheres.

According to Akhundov, during the council the presidents also discussed interaction in frames of the European integration of Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

"The heads of the two states announced that they attach a strategic importance to their EU vector in external policy, agreed to hold consultations and exchange experience in the issues of European integration and cooperation with EU. The interaction of the two states in this issue is of special importance before the upcoming inauguration summit "Eastern Partnership" in Prague on May 7", said chief of department of the Azerbaijani presidential administration.
