The planned amendments to the Azerbaijani Constitution, in particular control over the activity of municipalities, voices concern due to their possible noncompliance with the European charter of local self-government, which involved Azerbaijan in 2002.

According to the informational office of the Council of Europe in Baku, the due statement was made by active chairman of the Congress of Local and Regional Powers of the council of Europe Jan Mikallef.
He reminded that when joining the Council of Europe in 2001 Azerbaijan assumed the commitment to introduce amendments to the existing legislation, regulating local self-government authorities, in line with recommendations of the Congress.
"I encourage Azerbaijan to present the proposed amendments to the Constitution to the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe before referendum", said he.
