Vasili Istratov: "Reburial of Baku commissars affects the interests of their ancestors, residing in Russia"

27 January 2009 [15:50] - TODAY.AZ
Russian ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasili Istratov considers that the issue of exhumation and reburial of 26 Baku commissars affects interests of ancestors of the killed commissars currently residing in Russia.
"Along with the issues of historical and other moments, we should not forget that these are also humanitarian issues", said Vasili Istratov at a press conference commenting on the issue of reburial of residuals of 26 Baku commissars, buried in the Baku center in 1920.

He said exhumation of graves is a very sensitive issue.

"At the same time, I do not speak of the political part, it is not recorded in this issue. You remember, which difficulties were faced on the humane level while shutting down a number of cemeteries.  Now we are facing a similar situation", noted the diplomat.

Istratov said the embassy appealed due to the plans on reburial of commissars' residuals to the due bodies, but "received no clear answer.

"This issue can not be related to definite people. In the sense of minimal observance of human rights I think it could be done otherwise", said the ambassador.

He noted that ancestors of 26 Baku commissars, living in Russia, "have a right to take an interest in it and I, as an ambassador of Russia, will ask questions on behalf of the Russian citizens, who put these questions to me".
