Azerbaijan withdraws its peacekeeping contingent from Iraq

10 November 2008 [14:24] - TODAY.AZ
The parliament has received an appeal of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev about the complete withdrawal of the peacekeeping contingent from Iraq, said member of the parliamentary commission on defense and security Adil Aliyev.

He noted that on November 10 the commission considered the appeal and recommended this issue for discussing at the plenary session of Milli Medjlis.

Aliyev noted that the withdrawal of the military contingent is connected with the expiry of the term of mandate of Azerbaijani peacekeepers in Iraw.

Another member of the commission Zahid Oruc said that Azerbaijani peacekeepers made a large contribution to establishment of peace in Iraq and represented Azerbaijan in this region and throughout the world with dignity.

"Through the whole period of participation of Azerbaijani servicemen in the peacekeeping operation in Iraq they have repeatedly been awarded by the coalition leadership for the exemplary and brave service", said Oruc.

The peacekeeping contingent of Azerbaijan in Iraw comprised 151 people, beginning from May 7 of 2003.
