Oqtay Sadikhzade: "If the United States decides to attack Iran, it will not take into account Azerbaijan's position"

- How would you comment on the statement of former US assistant Secretary of State on control of armament and international security John Bolton who said Israel will attack nuclear facilities in Iran in period between the elections and inauguration of the new US President?

- I think the possibility of such a script is too low. Certainly, Iran's nuclear program may pose a direct threat to Israel. But as you see the possible attack of Israel is bound to the opinion of official Washington, in the context of current and future situation in the United States.

It is clear that Israel is interested to involve the United States into the attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, but the United States and Israel are difference countries, whose opinions do not fully coincide on most issues, even so more practice shows that the United States do not launch new military operations and do not support other countries, being allies with the United States, in their striving to start such military operations either in period of presidential racing or immediately upon its completion.

Moreover, the current leadership has too many other problems including US being stuck in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. It means that the United States will not involve into new military operations.

- Then how can you explain the announcement of John Bolton, who has a reputation of an "eagle", maintaining ties with the senior officials of conservative wing of Bush's republican administration?

- Perhaps, John Bolton is said to have ties with senior officials of the conservative wing of Bush's republican administration, but we should not forget that in fact he is a former official. It means that he can not be well informed. Moreover, his current status allows him to make different announcements, which can further be presented as his personal opinion.

- But perhaps we deal with the announcement which is a part of work for overture of the reaction of the world community if Israel or the United States on Iran really take place.

- I do not think that we are witnessing such a overture, preceding the military operation of Iran by Israel or the United States, as Iran plays a key role in the political resolution of the situation in Iraq and the United States are currently interested in the soonest political resolution of the situation in this country and this is another reason, according to which official Washington will further adhere to the course of political negotiations with Tehran and not the course on military operations against Iran

- Is it possible to say that official Baku has chosen a correct line of building relations both with Iran and the United States and Israel?

- In this connection, it should be reminded that official Baku has already be voiced his readiness to come out with a mediatory mission on the resolution of the relations between the United States and Iran. On the whole, it can be said that Azerbaijan's position in this issue is correct and balanced. On the other hand, the political arsenal of Azerbaijan is too poor in this issue and I am sure that if the United States decide to attack Iran, official Washington will not take into account Azerbaijan's position.

But still I am sure that the United States and its allies will not start military actions against Iran and official Washington will content itself with intimidating Iran.
