PACE co-rapporteurs on Azerbaijan arrive in Baku

PACE co-rapporteurs on Azerbaijan Andres Herkel and Eugenia Zhivkova have arrived in Baku.
According to the Parliament of Azerbaijan, the co-rapporteurs have arrived to familiarize with the election situation in the country. In particular, the co-rapporteurs of the PACE Monitoring Committee plan to finish a report on functioning of the democratic institutions in Azerbaijan.

The preliminary discussions of the report, developed by the co-rapporteurs, is planned to be held in late May during the session of the PACE Monitoring committee in Kiev. The report will then be discussed at the summer session in Strasbourg to be held in June of this year.

In line with the official website of the Council of Europe, the PACE co-rapporteurs will hold a number of meetings with the Azerbaijani leadership during their two-day visit to Baku.

In particular, they will meet with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, speaker of parliament Oqtay Asadov, Ministers of Justice and National Security Fikret Mamedov and Eldar Mahmudov, chairman of the Central Electoral Commission Mazahir Panakhov.

Moreover, they will also meet with representatives of the ruling and opposition parties, mass medias, as well as imprisoned journalists Eynulla Fatullayev, Qanimat Zahid and Mirza Sakit.

Azerbaijan joined the Council of Europe on January 25 of 2001.
