Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev went to Turkey to participate in the Summit. The first Summit of Turkish Countries was held on October 30, 1992.
At that time, late President Turqut Ozal proposed to establish economic unit of Turkish countries, though Azerbaijan supported the proposal Kazakhstan was against it.
The last Summit was held in Istanbul in October, 2000. Turkey President Ahmad Nejdat Sezer phoned Azerbaijani President and invited him to participate in the Summit in Antalya.
