GUAM foreign ministers synchronize watches ahead of Kiev summit

22 May 2006 [20:17] - TODAY.AZ
The GUAM alliance comprising Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova will be transformed into a full-fledged organization that contributes to stability and security, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Boris Tarasyuk said at a meeting of the GUAM foreign ministers on Monday.

"It is necessary to synchronize watches on the eve of the GUAM summit due on May 23 and approve the documents prepared for signing," he said.

According to Itar-Tass, the GUAM foreign ministers will also work out the organization's program for the end of the year and discuss cooperation with the U.S. and international organizations.

"Ten years ago, Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova began their cooperation. Now, we are on the threshold of reforming the GUAM into a full-fledged international organization," Tarasyuk said.

The GUAM was established back in 1997 to create the European transport corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia engaging sea, river, railway and motor routes for transporting passengers and cargos. In 1998, Uzbekistan joined the GUAM to leave in 2002.
