Boris Tarasyuk: "Ukraine does not raise question of leaving CIS"

16 May 2006 [20:48] - TODAY.AZ
Nobody in Ukraine raises the question of its leaving the Commonwealth of Independent States, but this organisation has no future in the form as it is, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Boris Tarasyuk has said.

He told a news briefing on Tuesday that CIS members had repeatedly proposed its reform, but things got nowhere, Itar-Tass informs.

"We are witnesses of stagnation of the CIS," Tarasyuk said.

As for Ukraine's proposals for CIS reform, he said: "I have got an impression that all Ukraine's initiatives cause allergy. We shall further raise the question of reforming the Commonwealth and examining the problems that are of interest for the CIS as a whole and for its participants," he stressed.

He added that the GUAM, a regional organisation comprising Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, was not an alternative to the CIS and was not aimed against any countries.
