Azerbaijani FM receives Thomas Hammerberg

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has received delegation led by Council of Europe's Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammerberg.

Foreign Ministry press service told APA that foreign minister and the guest concluded that Ombudsman institution is important for Azerbaijan.

The guest said that after this short visit, he would visit both Azerbaijan and Armenia again and acquaint himself with problems with human rights in the two countries.

Drawing attention to that fact that Armenia is an aggressor and occupied Azerbaijani lands, Mr. Mammadyarov said that in human rights sphere Azerbaijan and Armenia shouldn't be treated equally and some discrimination is necessary from reality viewpoint.

Mr. Mammadyarov said that about one million Azerbaijanis have become refugees and IDPs as a result of Armenian aggression and this fact shouldn't be forgotten.

Mr. Mammadyarov informed the commissioner of settlement process of Nagorno Karabakh conflict that Armenian military forces should be withdrawn from Azerbaijan lands and IDPs should return to their native lands.

He also said that thousands were evicted from their houses, their all rights were violated but international organizations still remains indifferent to this axiom.

Mr. Hammerberg stated that as a commissioner, he not only gives recommendations to governments on human rights but also investigates violation of human rights in armed conflicts.
