Azerbaijan's young filmmaker gets Student Academy Award of American Academy

Azerbaijani young filmmaker Elmar Imanov has received the bronze medal at the 39th Annual Student Academy Awards of American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He won the medal in the foreign student film category for "The Swing of the Coffin Maker."

Popular Azeri Actors Shamil Suleymanli and Rasim Jafarov have been casted for the film which narrates on the relations between father and son.

The medal placements were announced at the awards ceremony, which featured as presenters actors Laura Dern, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Greg Kinnear and Mena Suvari alongside Academy President Tom Sherak at the Academy`s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Winning films will be featured at two upcoming events. On Sunday, June 24, the Palm Springs International ShortFest will screen the Gold Medal-winning films. The Festival takes place June 19-25.

On June 27, the Academy, in partnership with The Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film and the Foundation for the National Archives, will screen the Gold Medal-winning films. The event will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C.

The Academy established the Student Academy Awards in 1972 to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the collegiate level.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is a professional honorary organization dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of motion pictures. The Academy`s corporate management and general policies are overseen by a Board of Governors, which includes representatives from each of the craft branches.

The Academy is composed of over 6,000 motion picture professionals. While the great majority of its members are based in the United States, membership is open to qualified filmmakers around the world.
