Longest ever bridge in Azerbaijan opened in Sheki – PHOTOS

A bridge across the Shin River in Inje village in Azerbaijan’s north-western Sheki region, the longest bridge in the country, was opened on December 8. The bridge has a length of 1300 meters and a width of 13 meters.

Length of protective structures is 1,240 meters. The new bridge links the village located between Sheki and Gakh regions. It will serve a population of 34,000 in 21 villages of Sheki.

The opening ceremony was attended by Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov, Azeryolservis Chief Javid Qurbanov, members of the Azerbaijani Parliament, officials of Sheki city authorities and public members.

In his remarks to the ceremony, Head of Sheki City Administration Murad Jabbarli stressed that the bridge which began to be constructed under the presidential order in 2007 is of great importance both for Sheki and for surrounding areas.

A new bridge will undoubtedly open up new opportunities for development of the Sheki city, which is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world, Jabbarli added.

Director of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences History Institute Yagub Mahmudov said that the bridge is located on the most important part of the Silk Road. Construction of the bridge is an important step to restore the ancient route, the historian added.

Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov spoke about large-scale measures to upgrade road infrastructure in Baku, as well as major trunk roads across the country. He added that more than 3 billion manat which includes both public funds and loans from international organizations have been drawn in this sphere over the past 3 years.

New bridges, road junctions, tunnels and new roads that meet global standards have been built in Baku and road infrastructure of country’s regions has been improved as a result, the minister noted.
