The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) signed a $572,068 grant agreement on Aug.13.
The agreement was signed by SOCAR president Rovnag Abdullayev and USTDA executive director David Hester.

Under the grant agreement, SOCAR will  set up a modern center for wastes and open a tender among foreign consulting firms with this purpose. Technical, economical, financial aspects will be determined and various proposals will be received to identify alternative ways of implementation.

"The company realizes a number of ecological projects, particularly, projects on soil and industrial water treatment, so, the company needs a new center of wastes, which will process, collect and liquidate the industrial waste," Abdullayev said.

He said talks between the SOCAR and USTDA lasted one year.

USTDA is rendering great assistance to implementing the project on waste handling and this grant will be directed at the development of the feasibility study and project. The center which will meet international standards will be established in the short term. It will facilitate realization of ecological projects in future in term of storing wastes, Abdullayev said.

The waste processing center SOCAR has used since 1985 has already become outdated.
