Azerbaijani intends to pay debt to Turkey by electrical energy

Azerbaijani national electrical energy network is connected to four neighbouring countries' energy system. Russia and Iran play a vital part in electric power exchange. These countries provides Azerbaijan with electrical energy in winter when Azerbaijani national energy network overloaded.

Turkey provided electrical energy for Nakhchivan AR. Georgia continues to negotiating with Azerenergy on paying electricity debt to Azerbaijan.

Chief engineer of the National Energy Department, Saleh Mammadov says that Georgia pledged to start paying the debt from August. But Azerenergy wants to receive the debt in winter because Georgia intends to pay the debt by electrical energy.

He said that debts of Georgia consisting of old and new ones. The old debts are the remaining of 1990s (over 32mn kilowatt/h), and new debt appeared when Azerbaijan provided electricity to Georgia during the Kavkasioni supply line accident.

Georgia has already paid new debts and paid the old debt partially (17mn kilowatt/h).

Azerbaijani owes Turkey because Turkey provided electrical energy for Nakhchivan in 1990s.

"One of the ideas put forward is that we should pay the debt to Turkey by electrical energy within a few tears."

New power plants will be constructed in Nakhchivan because of natural gas supply. That is to say Azerbaijan will be able to pay the debt back by electrical energy, APA reports.
