"All countries of the world are affected by climate change, and Azerbaijan is no exception. In recent decades, Azerbaijan has faced extreme heat, water scarcity, narrowing of the Caspian Sea and floods," Azernews reports, citing Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, telling at the Parliamentary Meeting jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Azerbaijan Milli Majlis within the framework of COP29 in Baku.
Gafarova said that President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev had put climate-related measures in the center of his national plans long before he was chosen as the host of COP29.
"Azerbaijan has shown clear confidence and determination in its future path by taking voluntary commitments, including the green agenda in national development programs, implementing projects related to renewable energy, and creating green energy zones.
At the same time, the selection of Azerbaijan as the host of COP29 is also a result of the world community's confidence in the ability and experience of Azerbaijan to act as a bridge builder, to unite communities and countries on a common platform," said the speaker.
It should be noted that the Parliamentary Meeting, jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Azerbaijan Milli Majlis, has started its work within the framework of COP29 in Baku. Sevil Mikayilova, the vice-president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union from Azerbaijan, MP of the Milli Majlis, is participating in the event.
A total of 92 delegations from 66 countries and international organizations and up to 330 participants will participate in the two-day event, including 167 members of parliament, including 12 speakers and vice-speakers.
In the sessions to be held at the Parliamentary Meeting, the real effects of climate change, the role of parliaments in increasing ambitious mitigation measures to make climate commitments a reality and the implementation of contributions determined at the national level, the development of the global architecture of climate financing, increasing resilience against climate change, a comprehensive and fair approach to this area promotion, use of technology to combat climate change and ensure equitable access, health and food security efforts in a changing climate, human displacement and climate change management, and other topics will be discussed and a final document will be adopted.
A number of bilateral meetings are planned within the framework of the event.
