Armenians are not afraid of Russia, Armenians are afraid of being left without gas

20 January 2025 [13:31] - TODAY.AZ

The situation surrounding Armenia's "accession to the EU" and the strategic cooperation agreement signed with the United States has revealed, perhaps, their deepest fear:

The fear of being left without gas.

For the first time in many years, Armenian media and broadcasts have begun to openly discuss this almost daily. Previously, they spoke about the abstract "reaction of Moscow," without going into details about what it might entail.

Now, the situation has shifted. Armenians are actively, and with a note of panic in their voices, discussing the recent incident in Abkhazia, where local separatists attempted to show defiance by blocking the export of tangerines and cutting off funding. "Moscow taught them a lesson for showing off!" Armenian experts and journalists have remarked.

Well, after that, it's only a matter of time: the same scenario could easily be applied to Armenia. And then their almost primal fear of losing gas reaches its peak.

Sanctions, export cuts, deportations of Armenians from Russia—these topics are avoided. But gas? That is the issue.

Why? Because they understand that Russia will definitely cut off the gas. And when Russia puts Armenia in such a position, Yerevan will have no choice but to seek gas elsewhere.

But Iran can’t help. The country faces sanctions, crumbling infrastructure, and other challenges.

That leaves only Azerbaijan and Georgia, who could provide some emergency supplies.

However, is there anyone in Armenia who will point out: "But wait, Georgia is 80% dependent on Azerbaijani gas"?

Exactly. That’s why nothing scares Armenians more right now than the prospect of being left without Russian gas.
