Georgiy Poltavchenko, who was appointed to the post of Governor of St Petersburg by Russian president, is Baku-born.
New head of Russia’s second biggest country St Petersburg was born in the Azerbaijani capital on February 23, 1953. According to Poltavchenko’s official biography, he was born in Baku in the family of man of war’s man. New governor’s father Sergey Poltavchenko was division officer in Caspian Sea fleet. At the age of 7, Poltavchenko moved to Leningrad with his family.
The reason of it staff reduction in the Soviet Army on Nikita Khrushchev’s initiative which caused Poltavchenko’s removal from work. Poltavchenko, who graduated form Leningrad Aviation Instrument-Making Institute in 1976, at first worked in local military enterprises, then in State Security Committee and had worked in this system for many years.
Before the new appointment he was the Russian Presidential Envoy to the Central Federal District. According to Russian press, he is one the trusted persons of the Russian president.
