Azerbaijani weightlifter becomes world champion

The world championship in weightlifting among veterans is underway in Cyprus’s Limassol these days.

Azerbaijani team already has a gold award. In the weight category below 56 kg and the M5 age group Akif Aliyev lifted 75 kg in a rush and 90 kg in a push. Overall, Azerbaijani athlete lifted 165 kg and won gold.

Four more athletes including Natik Aliyev (105 kg), Avtandil Gumbatli (69 kg), Vladimir Zhulayev (85 kg) and Aghakerim Kerimov (over 105 kg) will represent Azerbaijan. These contests are held not only in weight but also in age categories. 63-year old Zhulayev is the oldest in the team and 38-year-old Kerimov is the youngest.
