Baku Open karate tournament kicks off

An international Baku Open karate tournament has today started in Azerbaijan's capital. The tournament brings together fighters from Azerbaijan, Germany, Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Kuwait, Israel, Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Columbia.

Speaking to the opening ceremony, Azeri deputy youth and sport minister Ismayil Ismayilov praised Azerbaijan's sports achievements.

“Our winning 5 gold and 3 silver medals at recent Singapore Olympic Games is a vivid evidence to it.”

“Our achievements were possible thanks to President Ilham Aliyev's attention and care,” he said.

President of the national karate federation Yashar Bashirov said Azerbaijan's hosting numerous important sport events “proves that it has become a real sport country”.
