Azerbaijani wrestlers win 3 medals in Russia

Russian Yakutsk hosted the first World Mas-Wrestling Championships on November 28-30.

Bringing together about 200 athletes from 35 countries the event hosted more than 3000 fans.

Azerbaijani team including five maswrestlers headed by Ramiz Aliyev successfully represented the country in the competition, gaining three medals.

National athlete Sultan Agayev , 80 kg, won his rivals from Norway, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. At the final, he gave away to Russian sportsmen and took the silver medal.

Arif Shahlarov at the category of up to 60 kg won the bronze medal, defeating his rivals from Hungary, Ukraine and Latvia. Another sportsman, who took the third place, was the national women athlete Shafag Mammadova at the category of up to 55 kg.

As much as 15 teams took some medals to their homes. The championship among men was held in 60 kg, 70 kg, 80 kg, 90 kg, 105 kg, 125 kg and +125 kg categories, and among women, 55 kg, 65 kg, 75 kg, 85 kg, + 85 kg.

The Azerbaijani national team took the fourth place in the overall, standing behind Russia (12 gold, 7 silver and bronze medals), U.S. (2 silver and 2 bronze medals) and Kyrgyzstan (2 silver and 2 bronze medals).

At a solemn ceremony Ramiz Aliyev, the President of “Mas-Wrestling Azerbaijan” was awarded with a diploma for development and popularization of Mas-wrestling in the country.

The national sportsmen are also going to participate in the European Championships in Latvia in April, as well as World Cup.
