Azerbaijani weightlifter claims gold at World Summer Universiade

Azerbaijani weightlifter Firudin Guliyev has won the Universiade competitions in the weight bracket of up to 69 kg, setting two records of the Student Games.

The World Summer Universiade kicked off in Tatarstan, Russia on July 6-17.

Guliyev showed only a third result in the snatch, lifting 142 kg, but in the push he was victorious. In the first attempt he pushed 175 kg, and in the second - 181 kg, setting a record of the Universiade, pushing a total of 323 kg. In the third attempt Guliyev went for a world record, but the barbell which weighed 191 kg failed to submit to his strength.

The second place went to Iranian weightlifter Jaber Behrouzi, who lifted 322 kg (147+175).

The Universiade bronze medal winner is Frenchman Bernardin Matam with the result of 315 kg (140+175).

Azerbaijan also won two silver medals and a bronze during the ongoing World Summer Universiade. Ulviyya Kerimova and Kristina Iovu won silver in belt wrestling and weightlifting accordingly. The bronze went to Azerbaijani judo wrestler Mammadali Mehdiyev.

Azerbaijan is represented at the Universiade with a large number of athletes. Some of the athletes are already in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan.

The 27th World Summer Universiade-2013 in Kazan will be the first Universiade, and in fact, the first multi-sport event in the history of modern Russia.

The Universiade is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words "University" and "olympiad".

The first official World Student Games were organized in 1924 and the tournament has been held under the auspices of FISU since 1949. An alternative event was arranged by the International Union of Students (IUS) in 1947-1962, including one unofficial Games in 1954.
