Azerbaijan court hears college-enrolment fraud case

A father who wanted to send his son to college was the victim of fraud, the Azerbaijani Serious Crimes Court heard Tuesday during preliminary procedures in a case against Nariman Kakayev. The accused stands charged of embezzling large sums of money under Article 178 of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code (fraud).

Prosecutors say that Kakayev gained the trust of Baku resident Hafiz Agamaliyev and embezzled a large sum of money under the pretext of enrolling Agamaliyev's son in college. Agamaliyev went to the Narimanov district police who arrested Kakayev. Law enforcement bodies contend that Agamaliyev was not the only victim of fraudulent acts by the defendant. Court hearing was scheduled for Sept. 14.
