“Millions of people in the world are forced to flee their homes, escaping from violence, persecutions and conflicts”, says a statement of UN Secretary General Pan Gi Mun concerning the World Refugees Day, marked on June 20.

The statement says that most of these people and their family members come from developing countries and are especially vulnerable in the sense of the heavy complications of the continuing world economic crisis.

“The subject of the World Refugees Day of this year is “Real people-real needs”, which especially emphasizes that refugees have lost much-they have lost their own countries and it also emphasizes how much the humanitarian community should do to help them”, says the statement.

“Today even the most urgent needs for a place of residence, medical aid, education, food, fresh water, sanitary and protection from violence and harassment- can not be met. The displaced persons often suffer from malnutrition and death rate is high among them. Lonely women and girls are especially under risk of abuse. Experience shows that going to school promotes reducing the level of such a risk. More resources are needed for construction and maintenance of schools for refugees”, says the statement.

“Determination and actions are needed to settle these and many other problems. Solidarity must be a foundation of our efforts. This is especially urgent in conditions when the economic crisis influences the volume of funds allocated for humanitarian activity and activity in the development sphere. Marking the World Refugees Day today, let’s do so that those who have become displaced persons in the result of conflicts, persecutions and other events, could use support and services, they need to build a better life”, the statement reads.
