Ilgar Ibrahimoghlu: "US Department of State does not have a moral right to speak of human rights"

28 March 2008 [12:13] - TODAY.AZ
Unfortunately, on the whole, the situation in human rights in our country, is unsatisfactory. In particular, there are big problems in the sphere of freedom of speech and belief.

The due announcement was made human rights activist Ilgar Ibrahimoghlu, chairman of DEVAMM (Center for Protection of Freedom of Conscience and Faith), commenting on the report of the International Crisis Group “Azerbaijan: Independent Islam and the State”.

He said the country had a number of problems, connected with freedom of conscience, beginning from the ban of Azan and up to frequent bans to wear hidjab.

"At the same time I can state that we have chances to settle existing problems in the sphere of freedom of conscience, as compared to previous years. Though, we are now far from the settlement of problems in this area. And it is also unpleasant as existence of such problems allow various international organizations to speculate with them.

I think we should accept the current report of the International Crisis Group, as well as the recent report of the US Department of State, and other reports of different organizations, fixing level of freedoms in different countries, as no more than a regular report".

He said this is because the organizations which speak of the necessity to observe human rights, do not have a moral right for this declaration.

"In particular, the US Department of State does not have a moral right to discuss human rights after the prisoners of Abu Grade jail, following numerous violences, committed by US militaries in Guantanamo and Iraq", I.Ibrahimoghlu said.
