Thomas Hammarberg: "Main goal of my visit to Azerbaijan is to acquaint with human rights condition"

"I plan to visit Azerbaijan this weekend to have a number of meetings in Baku. I attach the greatest importance to meeting with Ombudsman," CE Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg stated.

He said that he would address the conference on ombudsman institutions as integral part of Europe and main goal of his visit's to get familiar with human rights problems in CE-member countries after he was elected CE Commissioner for Human Rights.

Mr. Hammarberg said that he can't give exact information about his visit schedule.
"But I can say that I will meet with government officials and NGOs within my visit."

CE Information Officer in Baku Ilgar ibrahimli told that in his statement that Hammarberg would meet with a number of right defenders May 5.

Right defender Novella Jafaroglu states that she will inform Mr. Hammarberg with recent facts on human rights violations as well as high-ranking officials’ politically motivated arrest.
