Azerbaijani secret services overlook phone conversations with Armenia

09 April 2006 [21:46] - TODAY.AZ
A scandal broke off in Azerbaijan after the Minister of communications and informational technologies claimed that the local secret services tap every call from the country to the neighboring Armenia, local media reported.

The Minister Ali Abbasov added that conversations via e-mail or with the help of any other Internet technology are also controlled, following fears of possible espionage.

Local human rights organizations attacked the secret services saying they are breaking the law as the Azerbaijani Constitution prohibits any actions of that kind without court's order or during operative investigation of a crime.

The representatives of the Helsinki group claimed that there is no possibility to place a call to Armenia from Azerbaijan, and e-mails of many activists supporting a peaceful resolution of the conflict between two countries were checked by Azerbaijani secret services since long time ago.

Official sources in Azerbaijan told to Regnum that it is impossible to make a call from the country to Armenia, only vise-versa. Apparently, this helps secret services to control communications.
